(Annoyances, Excel 97) Merging Styles Between Templates and Workbooks

Q: I want to start using templates in Excel, especially to take advantage of all the styles I've created in various non-template workbooks. Is there an easy way to bring a workbook style into a template?

A: Yes. A template is the perfect place to store your styles so each new document you create starts off with the styles you use most often. It's actually pretty easy to manage and merge styles between workbooks and templates.

  1. Open the workbook or template that contains the styles you want to merge. This would be the source file.
  2. Create a new workbook or template (or open an extant file) that you want to copy the styles into.
  3. Make the destination workbook or template the active file.
  4. From the Format menu choose Styles.
  5. In the Styles dialog box, click the Merge button.
  6. Choose the file from the list to use as the source for the merge.
All the styles in the source file are copied to the destination file. If you have used the same style name in both the source and destination files the destination style is overwritten.
